Organic production is now the world's fastest-growing food sector
It’s bigger and certainly more long lasting than the real estate boom. Yes, for with a growth rate of around 10-15% annually organic farming and production is by far the fastest growing food sector in the world.
And Australia is a part of it. Till now an inactive part of the movement and lagging far behind the UK and US in terms of production and sales, organic production has recently picked up in Australia in such a way that market analysts predict a growth rate of 20-30% per annum. With the Australian National Standards formulating guidelines for the production of organic food in as healthy, clean and sustainable a manner as possible, the number of certified organic food operators is rising at the rate of around 70% a year. The outlook is so promising that The Organic Federation of Australia has predicted that the total retail sales of organic produce and groceries could go up to $1 billion by 2006: truly, Australia seems poised to be part of a boom that’s changing the way people eat all over the world.
The change is visible all over. Consumers are getting more and more conscious about the ecological impact of food produced and marketed through traditional farming systems. Naturally so, for as a greater number of reports and researches expose the long-term side-effects of non-organic food on human health and the ecological system it is really not surprising that consumers are making the switch from traditional, chemical and increasingly toxic models to organic, natural and on the whole eco-friendly techniques of production.
